Multicorder for sophisticated medical diagnostics

The researchers from the University of Glasgow, UK developed ‘multicorder’, a device that could help make sophisticated medical diagnostics. The multicorder took inspiration from Star Trek’s famous tricorder device. This device can be used for quick and accurate diagnosis. The device comes along with a pair, a handheld sensor with a smartphone app to measure the levels of various metabolites in fluid samples from patients. The ability to rapidly detect and quantify multiple metabolite biomarkers simultaneously makes this device particularly useful in cases of heart attack, cancer and stroke, where rapid diagnosis is vital for effective treatment.

Jasdev Singh, an eminent commentator, passed away

Jasdev Singh, the renowned Hindi commentator, passed away 26th September due to prolonged illness. He was 87 and is survived by a son and daughter. Jasdev grew up in Jaipur. He started his career with All India Radio’s (AIR) Jaipur station in 1959. He was impressed by the renowned Melville de Mello’s non-stop seven-hour English commentary during Mahatma Gandhi’s funeral. He decided to be a Hindi commentator. His career spanned five decades. Jasdev covered nine Olympics, eight hockey World Cups and more than 45 Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations for All India Radio and Doordarshan. Jasdev received the Padma Shri in 1985 and the Olympic Order in 1988 for his contribution to the Olympic movement. He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 2008 and was bestowed with the honour of Rajasthan Ratna in 2014.

Samsung launched triple rear camera phone

Samsung India launched the Galaxy A7 model with three rear cameras. A7 is the first phone to have a triple rear camera. It is expected that the new launch will pass the targeted growth of 20-25%. The Galaxy A7 comes in two variants priced at Rs.23,990 and Rs.28,990. The company was aiming to replicate the success of its ‘J’ series devices in the sub Rs.20,000 segment with the ‘A’ series. The ‘J’ series has an installed base of about 60 million in India.

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lfven was ousted in vote of no confidence

Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven was ousted in the vote of no-confidence. The reason cited that Mr.Löfven intended to try to form a government. Among the 349 members of parliament, a total of 204 of voted against Lofven, while 142 voted in favour of him. Andreas Norlen, the Speaker of Sweden Parliament, will begin talks with the leaders of the eight parties, represented in Parliament, to fill the vacant position to form the next government. It is expected that Mr.Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party, would replace Mr.Löfven. Mr.Löfven will stay on as Prime Minister until a new government is formed. MOM completed 4 years of its journey

ISRO’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), India’s maiden interplanetary mission, has completed four years orbiting around the red planet. MOM was launched on November 5, 2013, and it placed itself into the Martian orbit on September 24, 2014. The designed mission life of MOM was six months. But it has been sending scientific data for four years. The Mars colour camera has acquired over 980 images so far. With the information collected by MOM, the scientists can now prepare a global atlas of Mars successfully.

India ranked 158th among 195 countries for investment in health care and education The Lancet

The Survey was done in 195 countries. According to the survey, Finland tops the list in the two key sectors. India ranked 158th in the world, below countries like Sudan (157th), Azerbaijan, China and Bosnia Herzegovina. It is followed by Namibia at 159th. The United States ranked 27th, while China placed at 44th and Pakistan 164th. The Human capital is a measure of the education and health levels in a population, expressed as the number of expected years lived between the age of 20 and 64.

Hyderabad Metro becomes India’s 2nd largest metro rail network

After Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan flagged off the 16-km stretch of Hyderabad Metro between Ameerpet and L B Nagar, Hyderabad Metro became the second biggest rail network in India with a total of 46 km service, next only to Delhi. It is also the world’s largest metro project under the public-private-partnership (PPP) model with a total estimated cost of over Rs 20,000 crore courtesy time and cost overruns before and after the formation of Telangana state.

India has lost its tag as Asia’s best-performing stock market this year to New Zealand. Indian equity benchmark Sensex is up 7.6% since the beginning of this year, compared with the 11% gain in the New Zealand Exchange 50 Gross Index.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of India’s second most valued firm Reliance Industries, has topped the “Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018”. His total net worths Rs.3,90,500 crore. This is his seventh consecutive year in holding that position. Every year Barclays Hurun India Rich List 2018 lists out a compilation of the richest individuals who have a net worth of Rs.1,000 crore or more in India. The compilation featured 831 Indians. Last year it has 617 members. The report also highlights the most successful business families in India. The top position in this list is dominated by the Ambani family with a combined wealth of Rs.3,90,500 crore, while the next four positions are held by the Godrej family with a wealth of Rs.2,23,000, the Hinduja family with Rs.1,59,000 crore, the Mistry family with Rs.1,38,800 crore, and the Shanghvi family with Rs.92,400 crore, respectively.
