  1. Windfall (noun) – bonanza, a large amount of money received unexpectedly, jackpot.
  2. Hydrocarbon (noun) – it is an organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon which are the main components of petroleum and natural gas.
  3. Exploration (noun) – investigation, search, inspection (of an area for natural resources).
  4. Taking a leaf out of the book (phrase) – imitate, copy/reproduce, follow.
  5. Self-reliance (noun) – self-sufficiency, self-support, self-sustenance.
  6. Rally (noun) – recovery, upturn, improvement/rebound.
  7. Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries OPEC (noun) – an organization of nations that produce and sell oil and which tries to keep the price of oil at a suitable level.
  8. Onslaught (noun) – a large number of people; abundance, plethora.
  9. Shale industry (noun) – an industry of mining and processing of oil shale. shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock in which natural gas is trapped underground.
  10. Spurt (noun) – a sudden burst, increase of activity.
  11. Feel the pinch (phrase) – suffer hardship, suffer adversity.
  12. Desist from (verb) – stop from, abstain, refrain, hold back.
  13. Rely on (phrasal verb) – depend on; resort to, bank on.
  14. Subsidy (noun) – grant/allowance, benefaction; financial assistance/support.
  15. Rationalise (verb) – streamline, make more efficient, hone/simplify.
  16. Undue (adjective) – excessive, extreme, immoderate.
  17. Hedge (noun) – protection, shield, guard.
