Ashok Leyland unveiled Innoline, its new technology

Ashok Leyland, the Hinduja Group’s flagship company, introduced Innoline technology. Innoline is a BS IV engine driven by an in-line fuel pump. This technology is a combination of the indigenous mechanical pump for BS III engines with iEGR (Intelligent Exhaust Gas Recirculation) technology. iGER is a renowned technology with the in-line pump or SADA pump. This in-line pump is well-known in the Indian commercial vehicle industry and is preferred by drivers and service mechanics alike, Ashok Leyland said in a statement.

PhonePe partners with IRCTC app Rail connect to facilitate convenient payments

This will enable PhonePe’s 100 million-plus users to now pay directly from their bank accounts using UPI, credit and debit cards and also the PhonePe wallet. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) app will have a trusted digital payment platform for the transactions.

India’s first Humboldt penguin was born at Mumbai’s Byculla zoo

After an incubation of 40 days, India’s first Humboldt penguin was born on 15th August at Mumbai’s Byculla zoo. As it was born on Independence Day, it was named as “The Freedom Baby”. The zoo authorities will be conducting DNA test to find out its gender. The chick weighed 75 gm and was reported to be healthy. Humboldt penguin: ♦ The Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) is a South American penguin that breeds in coastal Chile and Peru. ♦ The penguin is named after the cold water current it swims in, which is itself named after Alexander von Humboldt, an explorer. ♦ The species is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

Indo-Israel missile defence system Barak 8 to be procured by Israeli Navy

The multi-purpose Barak 8 missile defence system, jointly developed by India and Israel, will be procured by the Israeli Navy to protect its economic zones and strategic facilities from diversified threats and the sales for it have exceeded USD 5 billion. Barak-8 is an operational air and missile defense system used by the Israeli Navy as well as by the Indian Navy and air forces. Barak 8 has been jointly developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), India’s DRDO, Israel’s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, Elta Systems, Rafael and some other Indian defence companies.

NGT asked UP government to pay the price for contaminating the underground water

In Uttar Pradesh, the survey reports indicated that the groundwater is highly contaminated. It has been alleged that consumption of polluted water from rivers Kalinadi, Krishna and Hindon has developed several diseases including liver damage, cancer and kidney failure to the residents. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) said that the State government and the polluting industries should bear the cost to treat the people who have been affected because of the contamination. NGT also suggested that the State government and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) formulate appropriate schemes. It also said that the State may consider giving employment to a dependent of the affected victims.

West Bengal Government removed family income ceiling for Kanyashree Prakalpa scheme

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lifted the ceiling on annual family income for the beneficiaries of her government’s flagship women welfare scheme ‘Kanyashree’ that aims to ensure girls stay in school and delay their marriages till at least the age of 18. Kanyashree was launched on October 1, 2013 to prevent early marriage of girl children of socio-economically disadvantaged families whose annual income is Rs 1,20,000 or less. This Scheme received the United Nations Public Service Award last year.

Supreme court said that Creamy layer can not be applied to deny promotions for government jobs to SC/ST

The Central government told the Supreme Court that the creamy layer concept cannot be applied to the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities to deny quota in government job promotions. Earlier the central government has pushed for 22.5% quota for SC/ST employees in government jobs promotions. This was brought before a five-judge Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. Attorney-General K.K.Venugopal in his argument said that SCs/STs are a homogenous group. It would be inappropriate to regroup them based on economic or social advancement. The case also compels the government not to introduce special quota in promotion for SC/ST persons in public employment unless they prove that the Dalit community they belong to is backward.

FSSAI launches RUCO initiative to collect, convert used cooking oil into biofuel

Around 64 companies at 101 locations have been identified to enable collection of used cooking oil. According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI ), India has the potential to recover 220 crore litres of used cooking oil for the production of biodiesel by 2022 through co-ordinated action.

NPCI launched UPI 2.0 with overdraft facility

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) launched an upgraded version of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), UPI 2.0. Customers can now link overdraft account to UPI in addition to current and savings account, and the transaction limit has been doubled to ₹2 lakh. UPI 2.0 also allows customers to check invoice before making a payment to the merchant. NPCI is an umbrella organization for all retail payments in India. UPI version 1 was launched in April 2016.
